Last year, the BKA’s police crime statistics recorded 54,236 cases of residential burglary. The burglars caused damage of around 180 million euros in the process.
As a rule, household insurance covers damage caused by burglary. However, the compensation limits are limited, especially for sought-after stolen goods such as jewelry and cash, and there are usually strict locking regulations for valuables. It is therefore worth taking a look at the fine print to avoid any unpleasant surprises in the event of an emergency.
ALL RISKS COVERAGE –
ALL-ROUND CAREFREE PACKAGE FOR PRIVATE PROPERTY
In the area of household insurance, specialty insurers offer extensive insurance coverage via all-risk coverage concepts, which significantly exceeds regular household insurance coverage both in terms of the scope of insurance and with regard to compensation limits. Particularly with regard to burglary, the flat-rate compensation limits for valuables are significantly higher than those of standard household insurance policies. For example, jewelry in open storage can be insured up to 50,000 euros, and cash is also covered up to 5,000 euros. If required, higher compensation limits can also be agreed individually, although special safekeeping regulations must then be observed.
If you do not want to come away empty-handed in the event of a claim, jewelry, valuables and cash should be stored in a safe for larger sums.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SAFES
Insurers usually demand VdS-certified safes for valuables, but especially in the premium product segment, individual agreements can also be made for older, non-certified safes.
The amount of possible compensation varies according to VdS class, and if the safe is connected to the burglar alarm system or upstream structure-borne sound or motion detectors, the content sums are doubled. If the safe is additionally anchored, the sums can also be increased somewhat.
Safe Class I 65,000 EUR
Safe Class II 100.000 EUR
Safe Class III 200.000 EUR
Safe Class IV 400.000 EUR
