Whether on vacation or a business trip – anyone driving abroad should have the International Insurance Card with them. It serves as proof of valid motor vehicle liability insurance and is required or recommended in many countries.
Safe on the road with the International Insurance Card (formerly “Green Card”)
🌍 Where is the International Insurance Card required?
In many European countries it is no longer mandatory, but in some it is still recommended or even required:
- Required e.g. in: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine.
- Recommended e.g. in: Italy, Poland, Hungary. The insurance card is also strongly recommended for Great Britain and Northern Ireland since Brexit.
In countries that do not participate in the Green Card system, the insurance cover of the motor vehicle liability insurance does not apply. Before crossing the border into such countries, so-called border insurance must be taken out for the vehicle. In Europe, this applies to Kosovo, for example.
📄 What is on the International Insurance Card?
- Name of the insurer
- Vehicle data (incl. license plate number)
- Insurance number & period of validity
- Area of application (country code)
- Contact details of the insurer and the ombudsman based abroad
📆 How long is it valid for?
The validity depends on the insurance contract, at least one year – analogous to the term of the car insurance.
💡 Important to know:
Since July 1, 2020, the International Insurance Card is no longer printed on green paper, but on white paper.
You can receive the document digitally and print it out yourself.
Please note: Not all countries accept the digital version – we recommend taking a printed copy with you.
💰 What does the International Insurance Card cost?
It is free of charge and is sent automatically when you take out a policy and when your details change.
